Mercedes Benz GL – “It’s Ready”
I’ve been wanting to post this tv commercial for the new Mercedes GL for a while, but just never got around to it.
I like it. It’s funny. Here it is:

Does anyone know who the narrator (voice) is in the Mercedes GL commercial?
The voice sounds vaguely familiar. I think he’s a washed up actor in Hollywood. Must not be that famous or I’d probably remember his name.
That’s Richard Thomas — aka John-Boy formerly of “The Walton’s”.
It is Richard Thomas – check wikepedia for all the details – he’s really not “washed up” and he’s actually rather famous. Our perspective may be the difference in our ages – I am 54.
Thank you guys, I’ve been trying to figure it out who was that voice. Yes, it’s R. Thomas.
I just knew it was Richard Thomas (John Boy). I recognized him the first time I heard one of the commercials. I thought can I find out on the net??
Yes! Thanks.
you know I just heard the commercial again and said is the John-Boy….and then said I wonder if I can look that up on the web? So i did and I was shocked to find that other people wondered the same thing????? Is this weird? Or are we just very inquisitive people:)
This has been driving me nuts because I pride myself in figuring these things out… but here I am, looking it up! I knew it was familiar, from an old television show, but that the voice had aged so it wasn’t exactly the voice that would lead to the “aha!” Now that I know, I wish I hadn’t looked. Sort of like getting a rare book through an internet bookseller rather than waiting until you find the gem in an actual used book store, even if it takes years.
I think it’s all his theater work that makes him a “fit” for Mercedes, probably more known to the East Coast market than here in California.
OMG I thought so! I finally thought to check the net and I was right. Go John-Boy!
Doesn’t he have, like, 50,000 children?
hey, has anyone seen the 1980s mercedes commercial, where a newly married couple is gifted a mercedes and they drive around on beautiful mountains for a while until their car stops. they call the mercedes helpline, and the agent asks them to check a few things and they say everything is fine. then he asks them if they filled fuel in the car, since it was a new car and they dont deliver it with a full tank. they check the meter and the fuel is empty and they ask him how did it run for so long if it was out of fuel.
the agent replies, thats mercedes for you; it runs several kilometres only on reputation.
would anyone know how to find this one?
I recognized his voice immediately too, but it has just as much to do with seeing him star in the touring version of “12 Angry Men” about two weeks ago.
He certainly wasn’t “washed up” – and even my high school seniors thought he was excellent! (Gotta’ love field trips.)
know where the rock formation in that tv ad for viaga is filmed; it is a wonderful rock; two people standing by it; can see ocean near
The voice sound like an old actor who has passed away. His name was Fred McMurray of My Three Sons and various movies. Maybe he has a relative doing the commercial
I WAS TOLD THE VOICE BELONGS TO A MR. HINES. I DID NOT GET HIS FIRST NAME. THIS INFO GIVEN TO ME BY HIS FATHER EDWARD HINES
I may not remember names and faces right away, but I have a way with voices. I told my husband it was Richard Thomas! Now, what about the Johnsonville Brauts commercial? Is it Jim Belushi?
I knew right away as well it was R Thomas . I remember all to well him reading his journal writings at the end of The Waltons with his very distinct voice .
It’s not Richard Thomas, nor Fred MacMurray nor anyone named Mr. Hines!
It’s Stephen Schnetzer – AKA Cass Winthrop from Another World who then moved over to As The World Turns, not to mention many Law & Order episodes. (view his photo here: http://www.theatermania.com/news/images/7686a.jpg )
No mistaking his voice! I can see how someone might think it’s R. Thomas, but I hung on every word Cass ever said when I was a teenager watching Another World – It’s unmistakably the voice of Stephen Schnetzer!
Decide for yourself! Listen to hs voice in an 8-minute clip from one of the Another Worls episodes on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jqLRxlSlllk
The voice also sounds somewhat like Bryant Gumble. Doesn’t it????
I recognized the voice immediately as well. (as “John Boy”). I have very fond memories of “The Waltons” tv show.
Can you imagine that show used to be a PRIME TIME tv favorite?
My….how far we’ve fallen……the garbage that’s consumed today.
It IS Stephen Schnetzer. It does sound very much like Richard Thomas and even like Fred McMurray but it is Schnetzer.
I FINALLY remembered to google this question I’d been having! I knew it was John Boy too! I love his voice!
I thought it was Adam Carrington of DYNASTY. Gordon Thompson
Some of the Mercedes commercials are John Boy but not all of them. I know its John Boy because he is actully in some of them. And I for one want to hear some more of his voice in association with Mercedes, it’s actually one of the things that attracted me to buy one so it must be working!
Very good blog and comments for Mercedes. Best regards Private Krankenversicherung
Alright …now I’m confused …is it or is it not Richard Thomas ?
Richard Thomas recorded voiceover tracks for Mercedes-Benz latest radio and TV spots in April according to this blog: http://mcmvoices.com/blog/2008/04/richard-thomas-in-voice-over-session-at.html
I immediately thought it was Richard Thomas when I first heard the commercials, but my bf kept saying it wasn’t. So of course I researched it until I found that I was right. He also didn’t believe me when I said that was Billy Vera’s voice in the Burger King commercials. Someday he’ll learn….
Thank you, Yvonne! Everywhere I looked it said the voice was R. Thomas, but I knew that the ad I heard last night was NOT his voice, though I couldn’t quite place it. I loved Another World, too. It’s defintiely Cass in the spot I heard!
I am trying to find the music of the Mercedes Commercial (GLK SUV) that Richard Thomas did the voiceover for. I have seen it on tv just this week – perhaps he did it in 2008, but I know it is Thomas. It is the one where the SUV is winding around these really tiny little back streets and I want to say it was filmed somewhere it Italy but I am probably wrong. The car ends up in front of some building that looks like an old temple with a latin inscription across the front. next time I see it I will have to write the inscription. The music is somewhat dark and very cool.
I thought it might have been Jeremy Sisto from 6 Feet under and now on Law and Order.
I think it is Jeremy Sisto. *Could* be Richard Thomas, but I think it’s Jeremy Sisto.
I also recognized it immediately. It is Richard Thomas. And yes, I heard those journal entries in the Waltons for years and it has to be him. It’s an unusual voice. Not very masculine. I wonder why they chose it for the commercial?
I love Jeremy Sisto’s but I just know it is not him. It is R. Thomas (there is a lack of clarity and a little fuzziness somehow) and I have to agree with LuAnn – it sure is an interesting choice. Any clue o n the music yet?
Yea i’m looking for the name of that song too. any clue?
So can we get some kind of confirmation from Merceded? Or someone that can actually answer the question rather than assume…I came on here becaue I KNEW it was John Boy and was excited to hear him/his voice again…but now I am confused!
I have been listening to this ad for soooo long and knew it was Richard Thomas. By the time I got to work after hearing this ad the question left my mind until I heard it again. I watched every episode of The Waltons when I was a kid and if it is on when I am clicking through channels I have to watch.I never thought of John Boy or Richard Thomas as being washed up. I have often wondered however why he never had that large mole removed. I can now sleep knowing that I was right from the very first time I heard the ad on the radio. (Sadly, I listen to TV on the radio.)
“Good night Mary Ellen” “Good night Jim Bob”and the rest of you Waltons, wherever you may be.
It’s is NOT Cass Wintrop from Another World. I grew up watching that show and the voices are not remotely similar. Richard Thomas, who is a accomplished theater performer, has been doing these commercial FOREVER.
I told my son that’s who it was, and he didn’t believe me.
So there Rob, your Mom is right..
It is none of the actors mentioned. It’s the voice of Rufus Sewell, a British actor, who is currently starring in the new CBS drama Eleventh Hour, in which he speaks with an American rather than British accent. Like someone commented before, it’s not a very masculine voice, a bit unusual in its pitch, so it could definitely never be Jeremy Sisto, who has an unusually deep voice. Rufus Sewell. Trust me. Plus, he’s European. Suits Mercedes better than some soap star
…
But where is it filmed? It looks like Sarlat in Southwest France. How can I find out?
It sounds like Cass (Stephen Schnetzer) he also used to do cosmetics commercials! He has a great roughly sexy intoxicating voice, don’t you think?
I’ve been wondering myself for the longest time! I just saw the comercial and decided to google it, and bam, I found it! It amazes me to see how many people have been thinking about this also.
It’s the voice of actor James Remar. He is presently playing the part of Dexter’s father, Harry Morgan, on the Showtime series, “Dexter.” He also played entrepreneur Richard Wright on “Sex and the City.”
I thought that voice was Wayne Knight’s–the guy who played Newman on Seinfeld
I thought the voice was Bryant Gumble, formerly of the Today Show. Duh…but now I can hear Richard Thomas oh so clearly…so happy I finally know!
I thought it was Wolf Blitzer, doesn’t it kind of sound like him though?
People…. have you not seen the more recent commercials (since this thread started 3 yrs ago) the newer commercials are showing Stephen Schnetzer on the screen. You will recognize the face and the name from the post listed by Yvonne last August of 2008 (if you follow the link). I don’t even understand why there is still a debate on this if you have watched any television in the last 6 months…
I knew it was Johnboy and thought I would have trouble verifying this. I am glad to know others had the same thoughts… weird but kinda cool.
Jim
The voice sure sounds like Joe Manteqna of Criminal Minds. Does anyone agree?
The voice is an exact match to the CBS PGA TOUR golf announcer Peter Kostis. It sounds like a stretch, but it’s an exact match,
